Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Guwahati – Samdrup Jongkhar (140 Km / 02 Hours)

Meet and greet on arrival at Guwahati Airport. Thereafter, transfer to Samdrup Jongkhar — a small commercial town in the eastern part of Bhutan, situated along the India-Bhutan border. After completing the immigration formalities at the Samdrup Jongkhar border, check in to your hotel and relax. In the evening, explore the town at leisure — take a leisurely walk through its vibrant streets, browse local markets, and discover Bhutanese handicrafts.

  • Day 2 - Samdrup Jongkhar – Trashigang (182 Km)

After breakfast, begin the drive towards Trashigang. Approximately 18 km from Samdrup Jongkhar, you will pass through Dewathang — a historically significant site where troops led by Jigme Namgyal (father of the 1st King) resisted British forces in 1884. En route, visit a Mithun Breeding Farm, which focuses on the breeding of Mithun, a semi-domesticated bovine species of great significance to Bhutanese agriculture. Stop for lunch at Wamrong, a sub-district of Trashigang. Continuing the journey towards Trashigang, you will pass through Khaling village, home to a school for the visually impaired, Yongphula Pass (2,900m), and Sherubtse College — Bhutan’s first university campus, established in 1968 under the vision of His Majesty the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Check in to your hotel and relax after the journey.

  • Day 3 - Trashigang – Merak – Trashigang (Day Excursion)

Today, start early in the morning and drive up into the high mountains of Merak-Sakteng, also known as the Migoi National Park. “Migoi” is the local name for the elusive Yeti, and most local inhabitants can recall numerous instances where they or their relatives encountered the Yeti in the wild. After approximately 5 hours on a rough mountain road, you will reach Mon-La Pass, where a welcome party of Brokpa nomads dressed in traditional attire will be waiting to greet you. Experience their warm hospitality over a delicious nomadic lunch, accompanied by the local spirit and chang — a milk-like beer. Continue the drive to Merak village (3,500m), where you will stay as a guest of a Brokpa family in a local farmhouse. Explore the village, gain a deeper understanding of their unique culture, and learn how the locals spin wool to craft their colourful traditional clothes and textiles, as well as how they make yak cheese, butter tea, and ara — a local spirit distilled from rice, wheat, or corn.

  • Day 4 - Trashigang – Trashi Yangtse (52 Km)

Depart from Trashigang early, around 8:30 AM, to make the most of the day. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, depending on stops along the way. Visit Gom Kora — meaning “Meditation Place” or “Circumambulation” — a sacred site in Bhutan believed to be where Guru Rinpoche, the 8th-century Buddhist saint, meditated and left a body impression on a rock after subduing a demon. An annual festival, Athrteedayu, is held here every March or April as per the Buddhist calendar. Thereafter, visit Chorten Kora, a significant stupa in Trashi Yangtse built around 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday, modelled after the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal. Local legend holds that an eight-year-old Dakini girl was voluntarily sealed alive within the chorten as an offering by the Dakpa people of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. Stop for lunch at Karmaling Hotel, Trashi Yangtse.

In the afternoon, drive towards Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary — an exceptional destination for butterfly enthusiasts and the only place in Bhutan where the Ludlow’s Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi), the national butterfly of Bhutan, can be found. This rare species was rediscovered in 2009, some 75 years after the only two known specimens were collected in the same area. Bumdeling is also an important wintering ground for Black-necked Cranes, which migrate from nearby Tibet each year to escape the harsh winter. The sanctuary is home to one of the richest temperate fir forests in the Eastern Himalayas and provides a protected habitat for big cats including Tigers and Leopards. Later, visit the 13th Arts & Crafts School, where students are trained in 13 traditional Bhutanese skills including Masonry (Dozo), Carving (Parzo), Painting (Lhazo), and Sculpting (Jinzo). Overnight stay in Trashi Yangtse.

  • Day 5 - Trashi Yangtse – Mongar (90 Km)

After an early breakfast, drive towards Mongar. En route, stop at Trashigang Dzong — a fortress built in 1659 to defend against Tibetan invasions. The dzong served both as a monastic community centre and as the central administrative hub of the region. Its construction was prophesied by Lama Ngawang Namgyal, who directed the Governor of Trongsa, Chogyal Minjur Tempa, to subdue the local chieftains and build the dzong. Take a short walk around Trashigang town before continuing.

The road approaching Mongar is one of the most spectacular drives in Bhutan, passing over sheer cliffs, through beautiful fir forests and lush green pastures. En route, visit Drametse Monastery — the largest and most important monastery in Eastern Bhutan. Located approximately 18 km off the main highway along a dirt road, it was founded in 1511 by Ani Choten Zangmo, the granddaughter of the revered Bhutanese saint Pema Lingpa (1450–1521), who named the place Drametse, meaning “Peak of No Enemies.” On arrival in Mongar, visit the Mongar Dzong and explore the ruins of Zhongar Dzong — a fortress built in the 1930s using traditional methods, without plans or nails.

  • Day 6 - Mongar – Lhuentse – Samdrup Jongkhar (8 Hours Drive)

After breakfast, drive towards Lhuentse. Explore its unique cultural sites, including Lhuentse Dzong, the Takila Guru Statue, the Kishuthara weaving village — renowned for its intricate silk textiles — and Gangzur village, famous for its traditional pottery. After this enriching day excursion, drive back to Samdrup Jongkhar for an overnight stay.

  • Day 7 - Punakha Paro - Excursion to Chele-La-Pass

After breakfast drive to Paro and take a excursion trip to Chele-La-Pass (13,088 ft.) – the highest motorable road in Bhutan. Enjoy the scenic beauty & memorable landscapes from Chele-La-Pass. Back to Paro. Rest of the day is free for leisure. Overnight stay at Paro.

  • Day 7 - Samdrup Jongkhar – Guwahati (Tour Ends)

After completing the exit immigration formalities, transfer to Guwahati. Drop at Guwahati Airport for your onward destination. Tour ends.
